How quickly can we pay off that Mini C-arm?
Sticker shock leads most potential buyers away from a good purchase. Having the right tools in buying Capital Medical Equipment cannot only show you that a large purchase is justified, but more importantly, it will show how quickly you can turn your purchase into profit.
Fluoroscopy reimbursement is almost 2.5x regular X-ray reimbursement!
Specifically, I am going to show you how quickly purchasing a Hologic Insight2 Mini C-arm can be paid off by doing a modest amount of procedures per week. There are some good resources, particularly the CMS Fee Finder, that can help you tell part of the picture. Simply plug in the list of codes you are looking for, modifier or Global and hit submit to get the National Pricing Average. From there you will need the purchase price of the unit ($60k for this excercise), estimated monthly payment ($1188) and the quantity of anticipated cases per week.
The CPT codes that we should be looking up are (Other specific site codes are avail in the 73000 series):
76000 Fluoroscope Exam $98.82 (National Avg)
77002 Needle Localization by x-ray $71.16
77071 X-ray Stress View $42.40
73040 Shoulder $103.98
73580 Knee $121.31

Say you do a modest 8 cases per week and bill CPT 76000, that represents $766.56/week. Remembering that our monthly payment on this Mini C-arm is $1188, you are turning a profit in the 2nd week of every month!!
Another way to view the ROI is to multiply the $766.56 reimbursement to its monthly average of $3,066.24, divide that into the $60,000 price for the equipment in your unit is paid off completely in a little over a year and a half! Leaving the rest for profits for your and your facility! REMEMBER: this does not include the revenue you can add by stacking in a site code (ie 73040 or 73580). You will then be reimbursed over $200* in each case!!
Revenue streams like this cannot be ignored. There is no trick or risk of CMS flags being raised. The justification is in the technology. The Hologic Insight 2 comes with a great user-friendly interface at a great price.
